2026 Uveitis (Professorial) Fellow — Dr Sara Batista

23 Mar 2026
We’re proud to welcome Sr Sara Batista to Sydney Eye Hospital as our Uveitis (Professorial) Fellow. This Fellowship opportunity is supported through the Sydney Eye Hospital Foundation Fellowship Program, made possible by the generosity of our donors.

Sara completed her medical degree at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Coimbra (Portugal), followed by specialist ophthalmology training at Coimbra University Hospital. During training, she also undertook a two-month observership at Moorfields Eye Hospital and Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children in London.

Since 2024, she has worked as a consultant at Coimbra University Hospital as a Uveitis and Inherited Retinal Diseases specialist, providing both adult and paediatric care, and she was awarded the title of Fellow of the European Board of Ophthalmology (FEBO) in 2024.

Sara describes Uveitis and Inherited Retinal Diseases as among the most intellectually challenging and clinically demanding areas in ophthalmology—requiring deep understanding that goes far beyond isolated ocular findings. She chose Sydney Eye Hospital for its reputation in care and education, high volume of complex tertiary cases, and the unparalleled opportunity to learn from leading experts in Uveitis, Medical Retina and Inherited Retinal Diseases.

During her Fellowship year, she is particularly excited by the program’s emphasis on clinical and research innovation, with goals to further develop advanced diagnostic skills and strengthen her research involvement. She is also especially passionate about multimodal imaging, describing the process of integrating imaging modalities with clinical signs assembling pieces of a complex puzzle.

Looking ahead, Sara Batista plans to return to Portugal and continue her consultant work—sharing and applying the knowledge gained in Sydney to enhance care for inflammatory and retinal diseases. She notes that many of these conditions affect young people and can lead to severe visual impairment if not properly recognised and treated.

Outside the hospital, she is looking forward to experiencing Sydney’s cultural diversity and dynamic atmosphere and exploring Australia’s natural beauty—especially through outdoor activities and hiking.
