We’re delighted to welcome Dr Safia Hsin to Sydney Eye Hospital as our Corneal Fellow. This highly sought-after Fellowship opportunity is made possible through the support of our generous donors and the Sydney Eye Hospital Foundation Fellowship Program.
Dr Safia, originally trained in Switzerland, Safia studied medicine at the University of Geneva and completed her ophthalmology training in Lausanne at the Jules-Gonin Eye Hospital. Before joining Sydney Eye Hospital, she undertook fellowships in the UK and New Zealand—driven by a strong belief in the value of international experience and learning across different clinical approaches, healthcare systems and cultures.
Safia has a deep clinical interest in the cornea, describing it as a fascinating tissue essential to vision—bringing together a wide spectrum of medical pathology with the elegance of advanced microsurgery. She was drawn to Sydney Eye Hospital for the uniquely rich international fellowship experience and the opportunity to work alongside renowned experts while further developing her clinical and surgical skills in corneal care.
During her Fellowship year, Safia aims to deepen her expertise both clinically and surgically, particularly in corneal graft procedures, to further strengthen her ability to restore vision and deliver the highest standard of care to patients. She’s especially inspired by the delicacy and precision of corneal surgery—highlighting procedures such as DSAEK and DMEK (advanced forms of corneal transplants) and the profound impact they can have on a patient’s quality of life.
Looking ahead, Safia plans to return to Switzerland as a corneal surgeon, applying the skills and knowledge gained during her time in Sydney and sharing her experience with colleagues.
Outside the hospital, she’s excited to explore Australia and embrace the outdoors—especially surfing—and she also enjoys travelling and discovering new cultures.
