Eyes on Sydney

19 Jun 2026

Sydney/Sydney Eye Hospital (SSEH) has launched the "Eyes on Sydney" patient education initiative, a digitally enabled project led by the Orthoptic Department to improve patient understanding, reduce anxiety and support informed decision-making across the ophthalmology journey.

A multidisciplinary team of orthoptic, clerical, nursing and ophthalmology medical staff worked alongside consumers to develop two patient educational videos. Have a watch of the Welcome to the Eye Clinic and Your Cataract Surgery Journey videos.

The initiative was evaluated in partnership with the University of Technology Sydney and findings demonstrated statistically significant reductions in long-term surgical fear, alongside improvements in patient understanding and preparedness.

The project has been supported by the Sydney Eye Hospital Foundation and is now progressing toward multilingual expansion to improve accessibility for culturally and linguistically diverse communities.

“This is very important because this is a journey that can be frightening… it is a simple, well understood video that patients at all levels and ages will be comfortable with,” said Luke Platt, Consumer representative for SSEH/POWH.

A sincere thanks to our donors who support such valuable educational initiatives for patients.
