Meet the Fellows

Nurul Najieha Binti Amir

Dr Nurul Najieha Binti Amir

Mabs Melville Corneal Fellowship

I grew up in a small town in Bagan Datuk , Perak, Malaysia. My journey in the medical field began when I received my degree of Bachelor of  Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) from Universiti Malaya and subsequently received ophthalmology training from the same university. This achievement was a significant milestone in my life, marking the culmination of years of hard work and dedication.

Now, I am eagerly looking forward to the next chapter of my career at Sydney Eye Hospital as cornea fellow. I am excited about the opportunity to gain valuable knowledge, new experience and enhance my skills in cornea diseases management and surgery.

In addition to my professional aspirations, I have a strong desire to travel and explore new cultures. I believe that experiencing different parts of the world will not only enrich my personal life but also provide me with a broader perspective that I can bring to my medical practice.

Robert Prince

Dr Robert Prince

Glaucoma Fellowship

I am grateful for the opportunity to join the glaucoma team as a fellow at Sydney Eye Hospital. I obtained my MD from the University of Groningen in the Netherlands and completed my ophthalmology residency at the Rotterdam Eye Hospital in June 2024. Over the past six months, I have continued to develop my expertise as a glaucoma fellow at the Rotterdam Eye Hospital. I am eager to further deepen my understanding of glaucoma care, and learn more about the wide range of surgical glaucoma treatments and innovations that Sydney Eye Hospital has to offer. Upon returning to the Netherlands, my aspiration is to become a well-rounded glaucoma specialist.

Christian Engelbrecht

Dr Christian Engelbrecht

Graham Lovett Vitreoretinal Fellowship

Dr Christian Engelbrecht is an Ophthalmologist from the Free State, South Africa. After obtaining his medical degree from the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, he specialised in Ophthalmology at the University of the Free State in Bloemfontein. He stayed on as a consultant at the university hospital after qualifying to receive training in the Vitreoretinal Unit. He is currently working in a rural area of the Eastern Free State.

Christian is excited to join the team at the Sydney Eye hospital as a vitreoretinal fellow and to learn from the world-renowned team. After completion of his fellowship, he plans to return to South Africa to provide care to the community he serves.

Matthew Lee

Dr Matthew Lee

Professorial Uveitis Fellowship

Dr Matthew Lee obtained his medical degree from Monash University, Melbourne and worked in both Melbourne and Perth prior to commencing ophthalmology training with the Western Australian network. Notably, he worked with Lions Outback Vision, providing ophthalmic care to rural Western Australians through telehealth and outreach trips. He passed his RANZCO examinations in 2024 and will obtain his FRANZCO qualification after this uveitis fellowship.

Throughout his training, he found uveitis to be a particularly intriguing aspect of ophthalmology; the piecing together of examination findings, ancillary imaging, and systemic investigations is a challenge he enjoys. In addition, he has always looked up to his uveitis subspecialists mentors as intellectual and methodical individuals that are able to navigate diagnostic dilemmas; that is certainly something he aspires towards.

Matthew is grateful for the opportunity to work with the world-renowned uveitis and medical retina team at Sydney Eye Hospital.  In particular, he is excited to gain exposure to prescribing immunosuppressants and interpreting electrophysiology.
